Our Founders

After retiring from the U.S. Army in 1991, John Nolan founded Phoenix Consulting in Huntsville, AL, which he later sold in 2009. Using the proceeds, he established The ELM Foundation in 2012 and created JAHR2010 LLC for profit ventures. John is also a lay minister and has undertaken a church mission.

Helen Nolan, a registered nurse, actively participates in the family's philanthropy, focusing on housing, medical aid, legal assistance, and tuition payments. She serves on The ELM Foundation Grants Committee, leveraging her experience to identify and qualify individuals for grants. Helen has a Bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland and has served in various roles in her church, including a 6-month mission with her husband.

The Next Generation

Alexis and Ryan Lindow, daughter and son-in-law of the Nolans, are both board members of The ELM Foundation. Ryan, CEO of Compass Homes, a home building company, actively supports JAHR 2010 LLC, which contributes profits to The ELM Foundation. With a background in emergency services and home construction, Ryan provides housing assistance to recipients of the Nolan's charitable gifts. As a Captain in Huntsville Fire and Rescue, he has a broad perspective on community needs. Alexis, a mother of five, is engaged in her children's schools, serving as a PTA officer and Booster Club board member. She's also involved in church youth programs and mentors single mothers.
