The ELM Foundation's Pathway to Sustainability 2024–2025 Cohort
By Missy Hanks, Executive Director
At The ELM Foundation, the belief that a focused mission, accountability, and outcome measurement are the keys to sustainable progress is more than a motto—it’s a mission in action. That mission is embodied in the Pathway to Sustainability program, a dynamic initiative designed to support Huntsville/Madison County nonprofit organizations as they scale their work, deepen community engagement, and build lasting infrastructure for community impact by utilizing the shared Charity Tracker software database.
What is the Pathway to Sustainability Program?

The Pathway to Sustainability is a yearlong capacity-building program that equips mission-driven organizations with the tools, mentorship, and financial support they need to grow toward accurate and effective charity. The program is rooted in three core pillars:
Strategic Guidance – Participating organizations receive tailored coaching in nonprofit case management, collaboration, and outcomes-driven charity.
Community and Collaboration – Cohort members form a tight-knit network of peers, sharing information, challenges, successes, and learning from each other’s journeys.
Sustainable Funding – Each organization is potentially supported with financial support from the Pathway to Sustainability fund at the Community Foundation of Greater Huntsville and connections that help build long-term community impact toward self-sufficiency for their clients.
Unlike traditional accelerator models, the Pathway to Sustainability emphasizes agency accountability first, helping agencies build and provide solutions for the future.
As we graduate the 2024-2025 Pathway to Sustainability cohort, we are excited to spotlight the agencies that are shaping a better tomorrow, today.
This year’s cohort features an inspiring group of organizations working across a spectrum of issues—from addiction recovery to unsheltered services, youth empowerment to life coaching for a flourishing life. Each agency was selected based on their vision, community-rooted leadership, and readiness to grow strategically.
A Hand Up Transitional Living – A temporary housing and feeding program directing residents to community resources and self-sufficiency.
Catholic Center of Concern – A program offering emergency financial assistance and other resources to residents of nine counties in North Alabama.
For Life Ministries, Inc. – A faith-based program offering opportunities for fellowship, life coaching, personal growth, and service.
Kerryon Johnson Impact Foundation – A program that enhances quality of life by promoting social cohesion and economic development.
Life or Death Recovery Services, Inc. – A residential program offering opportunities for physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being for men pursuing recovery from drug and alcohol addiction.
The Caring Link, Inc. -An in-house program at local schools promoting equity among classroom peers and removing the distraction of unmet basic needs so that students can focus on the task of learning.
These organizations represent a new generation of leadership that is rooted in collaboration, case management, and data-driven outcomes toward individual transformation.
Why It Matters
In a city of accelerating growth and challenges, building collaboration and leveraging existing resources is not optional; it’s essential. The Pathway to Sustainability program not only helps organizations utilize the Charity Tracker software database but also provides opportunities for systemic change in their respective programs and the community.
